FEATS 2004: Antwerp, Belgium, 28-31 May 2004

Antwerp: Introduction

It’s a well-known fact that Antwerp is a great destination for a city trip. Special shops, leading fashion designers and countless restaurants and pubs make it one of the hottest cities in Belgium. Names of artists like Rubens, Antoon Van Dijck, Jacob Jordaens and Pieter Brueghel and Christopher Plantijn are well-known, but Antwerp has produced many other first-rate artists as well.

The scores of museums and many of the churches are evidence of an impressive cultural heritage. Moreover, Antwerp represents a thousand years of architecture and five centuries of music, artistic and decorative crafts, and is Europe’s second largest port (after Rotterdam). The metropolis (Antwerpians are known in Belgium for not being too modest …) sparkles, just like the diamonds that have made it the world centre of the diamond industry.
