Antwerp’s other attractions

Zoo of Antwerp

The Antwerp Zoo is one of the oldest and most famous zoos in the world. Its location – originally just outside the city walls, now an oasis of peace in the heart of the city, next door to Central Station – is typical of the nineteenth-century origins. You must set aside at least half a day for a visit because there really is so much to see and do. More than 4 000 animals await you. They will amaze you, endear you or fill you with the greatest respect.

  • Koningin Astridplein 26
  • Opening hours: The Zoo is open every day of the year (Sundays and holidays included) from 10 am.

Vogelmarkt

Weekly market on the Theaterplein: Sun. 8am-1pm

Vreemdelingenmarkt

Weekly market on the Theaterplein – exotic fruit and spices: Sat. 8am-4pm

Sinksenfoor

Yearly funfair, 30 May–4 July

  • Gedempte Zuiderdokken

Aquatopia

Below the Astrid Park Plaza Hotel, near the Zoo, you’ll find the recently opened Aquatopia where more than 3500 fish and other marine animals can be observed in their natural habitats.

  • Koningin Astridplein 7
  • Opening hours: Aquatopia is open every day from 10am–6pm.

[Update, April 2005. Aquatopia is closed for redecoration from 11 April till the end of June 2005.]

The “Bolleke”

This is somewhat the unofficial symbol of Antwerp. “Bolleke” is the name given to the De Koninck Beer, the most typical and popular alcoholic drink of the city.

The name refers to the shape of the glass from which the reddish beer is drunk.
